Mise en place. Everything in its place. When creating a calm and orderly outer world, it is essential that we take the time to set ourselves up properly. By gathering what we need and preparing for the task at end, our process becomes more streamlined. As Gretchen Rubin states, outer calm leads directly to inner calm. And isn't that what we all desire as highly sensitive people? I first came upon these wise words as a young culinary student when my instructor instilled them into my growing French vocabulary. "Before you turn on za heat, you must prep everyzing. We call eet 'mise en place'." In that setting, we had endless tiny bowls to sort our perfectly chopped vegetables and herbs for our pre-measured pastry ingredients. Fortunately, this concept has carried over through the years and I'm still practicing these important lessons. Beautiful piles of cut produce are arranged along the cutting board - sliced, diced and julienned just so. Individual ingredients are prepped out in a rainbow of glass containers, ready to be assembled for quick weekday meals like hardy salads, grain bowls and tacos. If you focus on one step at a time in the kitchen, as in life, you will stay in the present moment. When it comes time to turn on the stove, you will be able to focus exclusively on what's in the pan rather than frantically searching for ingredients. Daniela is the master of mise en place, which makes the pleasure of cooking much more enjoyable. I get to play in my kitchen sandbox and exercise my creativity without having to go through the more mechanical phase of prepping. I am so grateful for our compatibility in this arena as it makes cooking fun for both of us. Step-by-step. Presence. Focus. The building blocks to moving forward. When we can set ourselves up in cooking or other areas of life, we are able to take calm and clear steps forward instead of jerky, back-and-forth patterns. I know that whenever I practice mise en place in other areas of my home, life feels a little bit easier.

2023 has led me down an Astrology rabbit hole (ironic that 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit🐰) as I try to make light of the forces playing out in different areas of my life, especially during these intense months of March-May. What I've learned is this: We are not fated by the cosmos. Rather, we can use the knowledge of upcoming transits as a heads up and still exert free will to co-create our reality. Otherwise, why succumb to the doom and gloom? We are humans (not programmable robots as some would want us to believe) with a consciousness, a soul, a heart, creativity, and intuition, and able to make our own sovereign decisions. With that in mind, know that the upcoming two eclipses will lead to big, lasting change, personally and collectively. But in the end, the type of change and how it plays out is up to us. As they are related to the moon and the nodal axes, these eclipses will heighten our emotional state more than usual. HSPs and Empaths will certainly feel it more deeply. This particular Eclipse is rare and the second of a series of new moons in Aries (usually, there's only one new moon a month). The first took place on the Spring Equinox and the second, a month later as a Hybrid Solar Eclipse on April 19/20 (depending on your timezone). Typically, we see the energies play out for six months but this one will extend into 2024 because of its interplay with the planet Pluto. So extra staying power here! The key aspect to note about this cosmic event is how it will work with Aries in your birth chart. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac (linked to your birth into this world and initial identity) and is considered the warrior, the initiator, the one who goes bravely and courageously forward. Where is the sign of Aries located within your unique 12-part wheel? That location will indicate what house or stage of life the action will unfold in. For me, it's the 10th house of career and public image. What is it for you? You can access your free birth chart at Astro.com for more details. If you follow the monthly lunar cycles, you'll know that New Moons represent culminations or release points. Amidst this ebb and flow period, we see the fruits of our seeds play out for six months, as mentioned above. A Solar Eclipse, however, is a New Moon on steroids! And this one plays out at the very end of the Aries pie piece (at 29 of a total 30 degrees) so expect both initiations and endings to show up. Is there something you've been holding onto that you're finally ready to release? Has it been weighing on your heavily and robbing your energy as an HSP? It may even be a situation from which you are ready to break free to feel more empowered and self-confident. This energy may show up in your personal life and also on the world stage (ie. current events) in the form of collapses. In my opinion, these falls are called for now as we transition to a more equitable, beautiful, compassionate, regenerative New Earth. Endings are painful, no doubt, and the world is particularly colorful right now. Extra self-care is definitely encouraged around this time. Your sleep may be disrupted and your thoughts a bit hectic but know that this will all pass as the energy clears. Nourish yourself, hydrate, connect gently with nature and return to your heart when life feels overwhelming. I am so grateful for Astrology in demonstrating these natural cycles and helping clear out what no longer serves to make space for something more aligned. Let's use it as a compass to understand a part of our experience and not judge it. Our internal guidance system holds enormous power as well. How will this Aries Eclipse change you? If you feel called to, share what area of life this Eclipse will work with you and if there's something you're ready to ignite.

I'm returning to a topic we mentioned briefly at the end of our HSPeapod podcast referencing the various ways to organize your year, or in this case, your week. Please refer back to episode 1 of season 2 here. The notion of aligning to planetary influence allows for us to move more naturally through the week and to harness the unique gifts that each day offers us. For me, it creates a loose structure in that I can plan for certain projects or activities at times that make more sense versus in the way that society dictates (ie. work / study M-F and rest / crash on weekends). Of course, this isn't always possible due to travel or unforeseen events so I suggest using this model as a guide. If you are familiar with Astrology, you'll notice that only the inner planets are covered here because this information was disseminated before the discovery of the outer planets. MONDAY ruled by the Moon (Cancer, water sign) This energy is fluid, creative, emotional, domestic, and inward which isn't quite optimal for culture's "big energy and big output" expectations for a Monday, is it? It's a day full of ebbs and flows (think emotional ups and downs) so be gentle with yourself and tend to more aspects of self-care or home care, like errands, grocery shopping or food prep. A perfect day to feel into the week and plan, to set things up, ideate or map out a schedule. I love my slow, mindful Monday mornings as opposed to rushing into the week and taking on the energy of those rushing around me. TUESDAY ruled by Mars (Aries, fire sign) This heralds assertive energy, heat, movement, courage and strength. Consider Tuesday the new Monday! Here's where you'll possess a more fiery leadership style and want to initiate projects, aim for output, have a hard conversation or engage in an intense workout. Any big action is ideal for a Tuesday. WEDNESDAY ruled by Mercury (Gemini, air sign and Virgo, earth sign) This is the energy of communication, expression, intellect and delivering messages. Your mindset is sharp, you'll think more rationally, analyze, discern and express yourself authentically. A perfect day for decision-making, social media posts, podcast recordings or writing projects. THURSDAY ruled by Jupiter (Sagittarius, fire sign) Jupiter rules all things expansion - abundance, growth, goals, values. So naturally, this lends itself to learning something new or doing the uncomfortable. On Thursday, you'll want to focus on all things learning or delivering ideas (perhaps even controversial or novel), launch new offerings or increase prices which all take courage and self-assurance. This is also a day to prioritize spirituality, self-development and higher realms. FRIDAY ruled by Venus (Libra, air sign and Taurus, earth sign) Another beautiful day that book-ends our traditional M-F work week. Here, the energy is all about harmony, connection, relationship, comfort, and nourishment. Matters of the heart are central, as are gratitude and reverence - for yourself, others, the planet. Make sure you are in a beautiful environment (in or outdoors), that you're savoring gorgeous and nurturing food and focusing on love. It's a perfect day to go on a date (with yourself, your partner, a friend), clean the house, get a holistic health treatment, clean up your inbox or tend to finances. SATURDAY ruled by Saturn (Capricorn, earth sign) The energy of this day is one of action and doing so I tend to enjoy working on my business and getting organized. It suits me well to have a checklist, run errands and be productive so that I can fully settle into my Sunday without worries. SUNDAY ruled by the Sun (Leo, fire sign) The Sun, the light! Do what makes YOU feel happy on this day. It's all about your unique essence and whatever activities light you up so use this time to fill yourself up doing whatever it is that you love. How does this land for you? What is your favorite day of the week? Do you feel naturally aligned to these rhythms but have to function differently because of how life is set up for work or school?

There seems to be no relief around tight hips. We tell ourselves it's just a part of our physical experience as a woman, and we come to accept this as truth. One of the main culprits, of course, is sitting – whether it's at work or driving – but on a more subtle level, also engaging in self-care practices like sitting down to savor slow meals, relaxing on the sofa, cycling or even meditating in lotus pose. For me, the hips seem to always be at the top of persistently painful muscle groups. However, I need to first slow down enough to recognize that they are even tight. As a self-awareness practice, I start and end each day by resting on my back, hugging knees into chest and really feeling into my hips, noticing any discomfort that arises and being curious rather than judgmental. I've always known that women store a LOT of emotion in the pelvis/hip area. In human design, my solar plexus is defined, I have two emotional waves and this very center is my Authority (or inner guidance system), so I am extra prone to emotional expression. And with my history of repressing emotions, I can see why the hips are taking on most of the burden. Simply put, emotions manifest in our physical body. But beyond the emotional correlation, did you also know that the hips represent decisions in life? Especially those that involve moving forward. This concept blows my mind. The iconic Louise Hay said that “pain in the hips is a sign of being 'stuck,' unable to make a decision or see clearly what needs to be done next... Pain or discomfort advises you to slow down or stop, look around, buy a map, or ask someone for directions.” Luckily, we already have a trusted internal guidance system that comes from the body's physical cues. This allows us to make decisions that are uniquely correct for us. Think about it. Because the hips thrust the leg forward, we are literally taking a risk every time we step forward. So it makes sense that on a deeper level, contraction in that area will prevent forward momentum. So what can we do? Becoming aware and accepting of this trigger is key since we often tend to ignore the body's messages. Next are the actual practices that counteract tight hips at a physical level. Deep tissue massage, stretching, foam rolling, rockin' out in the living room with headphones (my fav), hula-hooping, yin yoga and epsom salt baths are some ways to loosen up those lovely hips. Realize that when you are doing deep hip-releasing practices, you may feel the stuck emotions move through you. It is completely normal to suddenly burst into tears, feel intense rage or briefly re-live a traumatic moment. Surrender and let it pass. You will feel much better. Once we delve into the root cause and look at our emotional and decision-making patterns can we truly begin to heal on all levels. ____________ Have you noticed a correlation between being stuck in life and stuck in your hips?
